Help to find your favourite feline friend.
How to choose the right cat for you
Shorthair or Siamese? Pedigree or moggie? When you’re searching for the perfect pet cat, one of the first things you need to do is decide which type is right for you.
But with so many cute kitties to choose from, that’s easier said than done. To help you make up your mind, we’ve scratched beneath the surface to create this comprehensive cat guide.
What type of cat should you get?
Moggie or pedigree?
Deciding whether you want a pedigree or non-pedigree is something you’ll need to consider when it comes to choosing your cat. The majority of cats are non-pedigree or crossbreeds, affectionately known as moggies. Non-pedigree cats often live longer than pedigrees, as crossbreeding can reduce genetic health problems.
Pedigree (or purebred) cats are bred to retain certain distinct characteristics specific to the breed. This can be anything from the colour and type of their coat, to their personality traits.
Kitten or adult cat?
There’s no doubt about it – kittens are super cute. But they’re also bundles of endless energy that require a lot of time and effort.
If you’ve got the time and patience to devote to a new kitten, and ensure they develop into a happy and social cat, it’ll be hard to look past those big, round eyes.
But if you’re looking for a more mature cat that won’t get up to quite as much mischief, an adult cat could be an easier option.
Choose a cat breed
Once you’ve decided whether you want a mature moggie or a cute-as-a-button kitten, it’s time to choose the best breed for your personality, lifestyle and family.
While cats have a reputation for being independent and aloof, all breeds have their own characteristics and temperament, so it’s important to do your research.
